Types of fences to choose from include:

• Pressure-Treated Lumber: while typically the most affordable and popular option for decks and fences built in Canada, one important thing to note is that pressure-treated wood is not completely water/moisture resistant, which means applying a water repellent coating, or stain, is mandatory in order to protect against moisture damage.
• Cedar: with a price tag usually double of pressure-treated wood, cedar is aesthetically pleasing, possesses oils that make it naturally resistant to decay and insect damage, has a pleasing aroma and is lighter than pressure-treated lumber, making it easier to maneuver and work with. Cedar is a strong wood which can be stained in any color, however could warp or rot and will need to be re-stained regularly.

• Composite Lumber: the most recent addition to fence and deck options, composite lumber is quickly becoming the most popular choice among homeowners. Why? It’s a combination of natural wood fibers and resin, and is designed to resemble real wood, comes in a variety of colours, is lightweight, won’t crack, warp, rot or give you that much hated splinter.
